CURRICULUM SUBCOMMITTEE REPORT
The curriculum subcommittee met on March 10 to discuss the
math curriculum at the elementary level. Member Dave
Bloomfield presented the team with a report completed by John
Hopkins University in 2010. Highlights of the report are:
o There is no evidence that different curricula give different
outcomes in terms of achievement (though Everyday Math
was rated as a having a 'limited effectiveness')
o There is also limited evidence that technology is effective
o There is strong evidence that using effective teaching
strategies can make a real difference
o Changing the way that children work together, and
classroom management and motivation, can improve
mathematics outcomes for all students
Dave presented Mashpee data that shows the longer a student
is exposed to Everyday Math, the better that student does.
Based on these findings, the subcommittee has three
recommendations:
1. The elementary schools stay with Everyday Math as we
have all of the training and resources
2. Teachers are going to be asked to decide upon what
supplemental materials they feel they need as grade level
teams
3. Professional Development will be offered with the focus on
showing teachers how to group students and differentiate
instruction within the class
