Mr. Howes pointed out that waquoit was a complex estuary system in
southeastern Massachusetts flue to the many different tributaries. The waquoit Bay watershed
includes Jehu Fond, Hamblin Pond, Quashnet diver, Child's River,Eel Pond, Seapuit River, and
the main bay of Waquoit and Sage Lot Fond, all of which required assessment and were
numerically linked together with their own thresholds. lrr, Howes described the Estuaries
Project and partnerships that were in place to assess the impaired waters and highlighted the
problems of the emb yrnents in southeastern Massachusetts, and pn'marily, nitrogen overloading.
Problems needed to be addressed because many of the towns economically rely on tourism and
the estuarine health continues to decline and the decline could cause reduced use of the
resources. Mr. Howes described the many reviews conducted by independent scientists, which
resulted in a means to measure and compare the state of the estuaries and use of scenarios b
Mashpee and Falmouth in order to seep management plans to restore the estuaries. Mr. Howes
reported that waquoit was one of the most impaired, degraded systems in the MEP region and
would take a lot of time and effort to repair the system.
Mr. Howes' pres'entation is available at the Town of Mashpee's website
(www.mashpeem a.gov/pages/mashpeeMA chlDASH SewerCornm/0122201 .
l
