It has been a good year for shellfish with quahogs
being the most abundant, and soft-shell clams increasing in numbers from a to
a fever years ago. Seeding from the propagation program resulted in good
harvests of oysters and scallops. In addition to regular quahog seeding, 3 million
of the largest quahog seed up to an inch)were planted in the Great Diver family
shellfishing area to increase harvests and improve water quality there (the
Co%rnmunity Preservation Committee funded project). The bay scallop seed that
we got from the hatchery and grew is the upwellers and trays has been pleated
in Waquoit Bay and Little River. oyster seed was not available from the hatchery
this year, but with CPC funds, we doubled the amount of seed purchased in 2013
(to 2,200 bags) and with Americorps constructed more trays to grow them in.
The amount of additional seed that is still small will supply oysters for next year.
The algae blooms were good for shellfish growth, but not bad enough for fish kills
since none occurred. The daft Comprehensive Watershed Nitrogen
Management Plan with shellfish as a key component was submitted to state
agencies with favorable responses and requests for more information. We are
working on a proposal to be subrn ed to the atonal hllanne Fisheries service.
by the Woods Hole oceanographic Institution to create and study 2 ages of
oyster reef in the Mashpee Fiver and Shoestring Bay. The $50 fine for the
citation issued for shellfrshing on June 9 in the closed area at Punkhorn Point
Landing next to the "Contaminated Closed to Shellfishing" sign was paid on June
2 .
Old Business:
Shellfish Propagation: (See Shellfish constable's Report above.)
Sponge Fouling: Nothing new.
Waguoit Bay Town Line; Nothing new
:oo PM - Motion to adjourn made by Marques and seconded by York.
