Street.Light Committee
Tuesday, May 22, 2012
Minutes
Members Present: Rodney Collins, Chris Avis, Catherine Laurent
Others: Joyce Mason, Tom Mayo
A quorum being present, the meeting was called to order at 9:00 am.
NEW BUSINESS
,Light at Rte 151/Winslow Farms Drive
A resident reported to DPW that the existing street light at the intersection of Route 151-
and Winslow Farms is net working. DPW determined that the light is privately owned,
but N TAR will not disclose the owner or why the light is in disrepair. The resident has
requested the Town consider taking over ownership of the light. RC will investigate
whether the light is necessary for safety purposes. CL will contact N TAR for further
information on reason for light's disrepair.
Maintenance Agreement _or Street L is
The Town's agreement for maintenance of street lights will expire in June, The Cape
Light Compact {CLC) is proposing a project to convert street lights from sodium vapor to
LED. The project would be funded 100% by CLC because of the projected energy
savings. Towns would decide individually whether to participate. A demonstration_.is
r
proposed initially whereby 7-8 existing lights in each Town would be temporarily
converted to LED so officials/residents could compare the quality of light before
committing to participation. Each Town would identify the lights for the demonstration.
Because of this project, CLC is recommending-an extension of the current maintenance
agreement. A new maintenance agreement would be required for the LED lights and
could Include costs for installation of new fixtures. The demonstration project is
proposed for this fall and the RFB for the conversion project would be in early January.
Other
The Committee also discussed working with the GIS Coordinator on completing an
inventory of street lights. Funding for conversion of parking lots lights to LED may be
possible through CLC or the Green Communities program. CA noted lights on Great
Neck Road South at New Seabury entrance are not working but residents prefer the
dark. The Committee will investigate whether lights are necessary for safety purposes
and if not, removal of them. consideration of new light at the intersection of
Mercantile Way and Great Neck Road South will be placed on the agenda for the next
meeting.
The meeting adjourned at 10:00 am.
Respectively submitted,
•h
Catherine Laurent
