s
FALMOUTH/MASHPEE UNPLUGGED
MARCH 2004
Dear
We are writing to ask your support for an exciting community initiative called
"Falmouth/Mashpee Unplugged". The event is scheduled for the month of March in 2004.
"Falmouth/Mashpee Unplugged" will encourage families to pull the plug on electronic
entertainment and "plug into" reading and family/community activities. Residents in both
towns will be encouraged to turn off their TV's, computers and video games for any part or
the whole of the month of March. A simple calendar of suggested substitute activities will
be published to helps individuals and families think about alternatives to screen time.
The idea behind "Falmouth/Mashpee Unplugged" is to make a change, and even a small
change can make a big difference. People can choose to abstain from TV and home
computers for the entire month, or for any part of the month. Any effort to pull the plug
on screen time and substitute alternative family or community activities is a positive change.
A number of communities simply focus on turning off the TV, but we liked the idea of
including other electronic distractions. Instant Messaging and e-mail offer quick and
oftentimes practical ways to communicate with people, but often leave out a valuable step of
human interaction - the human voice. Through modern conveniences, it's easy for all of us to
avoid potentially uncomfortable or confrontational situations "Falmouth/Mashpee
Unplugged" will encourage individuals and families to strengthen important relationships.
Our goal is to have you and other community leaders support this initiative. We are
requesting your endorsement and have received the endorsement of those supporters listed
below. By partnering with other groups we raise awareness that there is more to life than
being "plugged in",
We are hopeful that you will support this valuable community initiative and help us make
"Falmouth/Mashpee Unplugged" a huge success.
Sincerely,
Peter Kirwin Louise Patrick
Falmouth Human Services Mashpee Human Services
