AFFIRMATIVE ACTION COMMITTEE
MEETING OF FEBRUARY 10, 2004
MASHPEE TOWN HALL
Committee Members Present: Jan Strickland, Chairman, Melbourne Cragwell, Gordon
Green, Trish Parolski, Elaine Good and Marilyn Farren, Affirmation Action Officer/EEO.
Meeting convened at 4:30 p.m.
Acceptance of Minutes of January 13, 2004
Jan Strickland moved to accept the minutes of January 13, 2004. Gordon Green
seconded the motion. All in favor.
Mashpee Unplugged
The Committee voted to support the Mashpee Unplugged event which will be held during
the month of March. This event encourages families to pull the plug on electronic
entertainment and to"plug into' reading and family/community activities.
Follow-Up Discussion for AA/EEO Officer
Committee members were advised that George Spivy, Equity/Affirmative Action Officer
for the Town of Falmouth would attend their meeting of March 9.
Gordon Green asked if we could request Irene Carrington, the Compliance Officer for the
Town of Barnstable to attend a future meeting. All members were in agreement to invite
Ms. Carrington to their April meeting. Gordon mentioned that he believed that Irene
Carrington was hired part-time for bidding purposes. He indicated that bidding practices
have changed. Projects should be bid over a certain amount. Boston says that it is up to
each Town to police their own.
Jan Strickland commented that we need a knowledgeable person and a"go to"person.
An AA/EEO Officer could eliminate the price of a lawyer potentially. Trish mentioned
that the school and the Town could share the cost of this position.
Activity Suggestions
Several ideas were discussed relative to a future"No Place for Hate" activity. Some
suggestions were:
• invite Louise Patrick, the Human Service Coordinator.
• invite the Activities Director for the Boys and Girls Club, George Noonan
• talk with Lisa Hettinger, who is the Town's Dare Officer
• invite Shirley McCormick of the Mashpee Children's Museum
Elaine Good mentioned that Mike Tridda of the Cape Cod Community College would not
commit to anything.
