Summary of Discussion with Norma Holder-Hall, Director of Barnstable Human
Services, Coordinator of Cape Cod Multicultural Festival
Norma suggests:
Decide what exactly, the plan will be - Cultural festival?
Pot Luck Dinner?
Arts and Crafts?
Do you primarily want to focus on ethnic diversity?
Once the committee decides what the specific plan will be, KEEP IT SIMPLE. Do not
change plans after decision is made, it will get too complicated. Keep your eye on the end
result.
Pot Luck dinner sounds like a good idea for a first attempt. Arts and crafts bring
complications - can become like a flea market. Everyone will want to sell his or her
wares. The Multicultural Festival encountered many difficulties around the craft piece of
the festival.
Norma suggests "You want to show people who Mashpee is, not what Mashpee sells".
Focusing on food, rather than cultural performances or arts and crafts will probably be
most successful and least complicated.
Involving restaurants involves more work than asking individuals or groups to bring food
for potluck. Multicultural Festival took place in dead of winter - restaurants were looking
to advertise - they won't be looking to do this in August.
Will you have a budget?
Will you do buffet style?
Divide up tasks.
Each person on committee should think about who they know, and with which ethnic
group those friends/acquaintances identify. Find out who would like to be involved. Look
through phone book for cultural/ethnic groups - contact these folks to see if they want to
participate. Try to think of the less common groups - Vietnamese? Tibetan?
Get letters out to individuals and groups to see if they want to participate - follow letters
up with a phone call.
Put someone in charge of publicity -this should be good PR for Mashpee.
It would be reasonable to charge $5 a head for the potluck. Otherwise, since the event
will be held in August, you may get swamped and run out of food.
Have someone speak at the event to say who is behind organizing it, and what the
goal is.
