Ms. Waterman inquired about clarification regarding voting members, and it was stated that the voting
members present today included the Chair, Ms. Waterman, Ms. Wilson and Ms. Johnson-Graham. Ms.
Waterman recommended a roll call vote.
MOTION: Ms. Johnson-Graham made a motion to accept the changes as recommended by the
Town Manager and to be submitted to the Board of Selectmen. Ms. Nilson seconded the motion.
Roll Call Vote: Ms.Waterman-yes; Ms. Wilson-yes; Ms. Johnson-Graham-yes; Chairwoman
Stevenson-yes
Ms. Landry confirmed that she would share the vote with the Town Manager's office, adding that it
had already been added to the agenda for the Board of Selectmen's next meeting. The Chair inquired
whether a member of the Committee should be in attendance at the meeting, and also suggested
drafting text for submittal to the paper, regarding the newly named Committee. Since the Committee
was already established, Selectman Cotton recommended that any new voting members would need to
be formally accepted by the Board of Selectmen. Selectman Cotton added that the MIDC policy spoke
for itself so members would not need to attend and as Liaison, he would address any questions. Ms.
Waterman inquired whether Committee members attending the BOS meeting might receive questions
that they would not yet be able to answer as it was still the early stages of developing the reestablished
Committee. The Chair inquired who would be responsible for updating the paper with information
about the Committee and Selectman Cotton responded that the policy could be provided to the press
and anything additional released should relate directly to the policy. There was further question
regarding voting membership and it was clarified that Mr. Horner and Ms. Doyle were approved
alternate members, voting only in the event of a lack of quorum.
NEW BUSINESS
Guest Speaker,Reverend Nell Fields,Falmouth No Place for Hate Steering Committee-
The Chair shared with the Committee her email sent to Reverend Fields summarizing the Committee.
Upon her arrival, meeting attendees introduced themselves and Reverend Field introduced herself as
the minister at Waquoit Congregational Church, Reverend Field summarized the history of Falmouth's
No Place for Hate Committee, which dealt with bullying and discrimination issues, and sponsored
events such as the Martin Luther King Breakfast, potlucks and participation in the Powwow and
Falmouth's holiday parade. Reverend Fields explained that, over time, there were changes to the
Committee and the Steering Committee was reestablished, which had become project and event driven
and responsive to events occurring worldwide.
Reverend Fields indicated that they attempted to develop one program every two months, reaching out
to their 500 person mailing list. Although students were involved in many of their activities, the
Steering Committee was seeking to develop a student run NPFH group to establish events at the
school. Reverend Fields discussed their NPFH Civic Award they established to recognize and raise up
people who have helped with human rights and making the community a better place. The next
presentation and MLK Breakfast would take place on January 21 with speaker Reverend June Cooper.
Reverend Fields distributed brochures of Falmouth's NPFH and noted that they had discussed the title
many times, deciding that it was recognizable so they decided to keep it, stating that there was hate in
the world and it was necessary to educate people.
Ms. Waterman inquired how Falmouth defined culture and shared the way in which Mashpee
identified culture. Reverend Fields responded that they also widened the definition, and discussed the
2
