indicated that they would help as much as possible and suggested the possibility of co-sponsoring
events, such as the MLK Breakfast,
The Chair inquired about the use of social media. Reverend Fields responded that people
communicatedthroughsocial media and it allowed interaction with other groups but cautioned the
need to stay away from political groups. Reverend Fields suggested inviting the Police Chief as
someone on the front lines and recommended keeping the group's message simple with a goal to
educate people.
lE utnre Planning-The Chair suggested that the Committee would need to identify their future
focus. The Chair reported that the library was also interested in addressing diversity and inclusion in
their work and suggested the possibility of working together. Ms. Waterman added that the Senior
Center would be available should the Committee ever be seeking additional space and Ms. Johnson-
Graham also offered space at the Tribe's Headquarters.
The Chair noted that many departments in the Town provided articles in the newspaper and suggested
that the Committee consider using the paper as a means to communicate their efforts. Ms. Wilson
responded that they had a readership of over 2,000. The Chair also suggested the possibility of making
use of the TV or radio station. The Chair referenced a number of activities occurring in the area and
suggested it would be helpful to share information at meetings.
Ms. Johnson-Graham stated that she liked that they were part of the Town, showing Town support, and
the opportunity to meet monthly. The Chair liked the idea of inviting the Police Department and
inquired who to invite to speak next time. Ms. Waterman suggested reviewing.the list of categories
identified in the Policy and invite people who would speak about those areas, to gain a better
understanding of their challenges and needs.
Ms. Doyle requested greater clarification regarding the social media policy because it would provide
direct access to the community. Selectman Cotton responded that individuals could use their personal
Facebook pages to deliver messages but anything related to the Committee would need to be addressed
through Mashpee's policy. Selectman Cotton agreed that featuring speakers such as the Police and
Fire Chief and the schools and the Boys and Girls Club, would be a great idea.
Mr. Horner stated that, if he was contacted to be a speaker in Falmouth, he would wish to do so only as
a representative of the community of Mashpec and the efforts of the Committee. Ms. Waterman
suggested that it would be better if Mr. Horner represented his own views, recognizing that he was also
a member of the MIDC and he was in agreement.
There was further discussion about establishing visibility. Ms. Wilson referenced the Town's web
page that would be developed for the MIDC, to include the purpose and membership. There was
further discussion about the membership and the request that the alternate members be changed to
regular voting members. There was discussion suggesting that by virtue of Affirmative Action being
replaced by BOS vote, alternate members would be converted to regular voting members. Ms. Landry
would follow up with the IT Department to update the Affirmative Action page with the new name,
purpose and membership.
There was consensus to invite the Chief of Police to speak at the next meeting. The Chair would also
follow up with the library.
4
