r
Chief Baker offered to return n another meeting to discuss fire prevention activities.
Nor. white inquired about a general emergency event and how Chief Baker would communicate
the emergency to residents. Chief Baker responded that Entergy would be required to contact
MEMA, the NRC and certain radio stations. Chief Bakker would receive information and updates
through the Homeland Security Alert Network. Chief Baker would then be able to pass along
information through the reverse-911 system and on the radio. Mr. white questioned how quickly
Mashpee could be evacuated and the Chief responded that there was currently no plan to
evacuate Mashpee residents and that it was likely residents would shelter in place. Chief Baker
added that more study was needed to determine safe buildings. The Chief referenced the ping
alert available on the NMNM site in order to receive an emergency alert.
Mr. Petersen inquired about the MESA and Entergy plans and the way in which the information
would be made public_ Chief Baker responded that the planning likely would not be made public
for months or years but indicated that the Cape was in a better place than 3 months ago, and that
he would forward information as it became available.
A member of the audience referenced recent super storms and possible fire danger. Chief Baker
responded that 30-40 acres of the wampanoag lard in the Refuge had experienced savannah
pruning and patchwork pruning was completed in areas throughout the Town in such areas as
Red Brook Road and the Refuge. Chief ulcer stated that the land was being managed through
private and public partners, Conservation land and Federal land.
Zoen Cagan of Mashpee inquired about volunteering and Chief Baker recommended contacting
the Red Cross, County Health and the Disaster Animal Response Team.
Pamela Hughes of Falmouth inquired about staying safe during blizzards like Nemo when she
was faced with no communication services and frozen pipes. Mr. Baker recommended use of
older phones, battery operated radios and suggested that digital glitches could occur with
extreme weather conditions. It was also suggested not to bundle services and to be prepared for
impending storms.
. net Azzaravitz of Falmouth expressed-great respect for Chief Baker"s efforts but expressed
concern about the NRC's mandate that Pilgrim assure the safety of residents, which also cannot
be guaranteed by MEMA and stated that the plant should be closed. Chief Baker stated that
Mashpee had a Town Meeting Article in reference to Pilgrim. Marcia eckiness of Mashpee
stated that insurance policies exclude nuclear catastrophes and encouraged residents to attend
Town Meeting to support the Town Meeting Article as Entergy was out an out of state operation
with little vested interest in the area.
Margaret Cooper of Falmouth reference blizmd Nemo and expressed concern about the NStar
and Com'ca.st's infrastructure that was in need of upgrades and long term maintenance. Chief
Baker stated that NStar received a fine for their unresponsiveness to Irene. NStar has since
become very responsive, making available Community Liaisons and Ambassadors who served as
constant contacts to the towns, sometimes with the ability to problem solve as issues occurred.
Chief Baker also stated that tree clearing had occurred in some areas and mobile transformers
had also been added.
