Plan for the Pollinator Gardens at the Community Garden Site Environmental Landscape Consultants LLC
growth. The addition of ornamental grasses—mostly native grasses—is to add habitat for other
wildlife, to provide nesting areas for bumblebees, to add interest and to reduce overall maintenance.
Grasslands are a disappearing habitat on Cape Cod, and these gardens are designed to demonstrate an
ornamental grassland garden design that can be done by homeowners and property owners to replace
turf, reduce impacts on our sensitive water resources and to add wildlife habitat value. They are also
very attractive in multiple seasons—year-round really—and are at their best in summer and early fall.
The principal site preparation agreed to by the Conservation Commission in advance is treatment of
the existing turf and weeds with a wetland approved formula hand applied with shields to prevent these
plants from becoming weeds in the new gardens. If the site is too compacted, tilling may be required
before planting. ELC will bring tools to edge the gardens by volunteers before planting to create a
clear delineation between the gardens and the remaining turf. An organic fertilizer will be added to the
planting holes—and for some plants compost will also be added—to enhance plant establishment.
ELC staff will help find sources for these plants. Furthermore, we have agreed to help in site
preparation and, more importantly, to provide our expertise and experience to lay out the final planting
design on the day of planting. Furthermore, ELC staff will provide training and oversight, as well as
loan of tools and donation of plants, fertilizer and additional staff time, to see that the gardens are
successfully planted.
Finally, ELC is available to provide some monitoring and to develop management plans for the
gardens upon completion.
Thank you for this opportunity to enhance the aesthetics and conservation interests of the Town of
Mashpee.
