September 30, 2006
R. Lee Fleming, Director
Office of Federal Acknowledgement
Bureau of Indian Affairs
1941 Constitution Avenue
North West Washington, D.C. 20240
The South Cape Beach State Park Advisory Committee has read many newspaper
articles since April, 2006, in which members of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribal Council
have stated that they wish to acquire the South Cape Beach State Park through
negotiations.
In 1977 The South Cape Beach State Park Advisory Committee was established by the
Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The goal of the Committee, the Town of Mashpee
and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in the development of the South Cape Beach
Park is the conservation and recreational use of a great cultural area by the citizens of
the Commonwealth. Paramount in all planning objectives is the development of the
resources that comprise the area's historical heritage as well as its natural scenic
'beauty.
The Act states that the Committee shall be responsible for making recommendations to
the Department of Environmental Management relative to South Cape Beach on such
matters to include, but not be limited to park rules and regulations, design and plan
review.
The development and use of the park is limited to bathing, sunning, hiking, fishing,
nature interpretation, non-motorized biking, and recreational use consistent with the
fragile ecology of the site.
The Committee members feel that they have protected and preserved this fragile piece
of real estate, and have ensured that it may be accessible to, and enjoyed by, all our
citizens. We strongly feel that it should continue to remain in our care.
Sincerely,
The South Cape Beach State Park Advisory Committee
Jeralyn Smith, Chairman
Frank K. Connelly, Vice Chairman
William Martiros, Charter Member
C. Ben Lofchie
J. Michael Cardeiro
Robert Lancaster
Lance Lambros
Carey Murphy
Gus Frederick
