TOWN OF MASHPEE
SOUTH CAPE BENCH STATE PARC
ADVISORY COMMITTEE
Tuesday, August 5, 2008
Members Present: Members Absent:
Jeralyn Smith, Chairman Frank C nnelly
Bill 11 artiros Michael Cardeiro
Ben L fchie Lend Lambros
Steve Pinard Carey Murphy
Lewis Newell Gus Frederick
Robert Lancaster
Chairman Jeralyn Smith called the meeting to order at :1 o PM.
REVIEW of MINUTES
motion was made: seconded and passed to approve as presented the minutes from the
meeting held on .lune 10, 2008.
SUGGESTIONS FOR COMMITTEE ACTION
Place a bike rack at the entrance to the pathway to the beach
Take a proactive stance regarding having flltime lifeguards for the beach, and
improving the pathway to the beach to make it maneuverable for the handicapped
Several committee members suggested that the State law may require that two lifeguards, but
not just one, -must be on duty at all state park beaches, and that all state park beaches are to
be handicap-accessible. The sandy path to the South Cape State Park beach at this point is not
wheelchair accessible, and it was noted by committee members that thea have been lifeguards
on duty on some, but not all, days this season. It was suggested that the explanation for this
may be that on the days when there were no lifeguards, only one, but not two lifeguards were
available. If there is just one lifeguard present, and he/she is required to leave the outlook post
for an emergency, then no one is on duty to cover the rest of the beach area, creating an unsafe
situation. 'To corer all bases, the Mate has posted a NO LIFEGUARDS ON DUTY sign at the
entrance to the road leading to the beach. Steve Pinard strongly recommended that the
committee conduct research as to specifics of the state law requirements regarding both
lifeguards and handicap accessibility, before approaching Allan Morris to press the Mate on
action on these two issues.
The committee was in agreement that the work on the overlook deck, and the addition of the
new shed both have made a significant improvement to the State Park.
NEXT MEETING
The net meeting was scheduled for Tuesday, Sept. 9, 2008, :00 PILI at Town Full. As there
was no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 6:35 PM.
Respectfully submitted,
Ina G. Scohm
Recording cretar
t
