Mashpee Planning Board <br /> Minutes of Meeting <br /> August 1 ,201 1 at 6:30 ppm. <br /> Selectmen"s Meng Room, Mashpee Town Hall <br /> CALL To ORDER <br /> The Town of Mashpee Plng Board meeting was opened with a quon.un in the Selectmen"s <br /> Meeting Hoorn at Mashpee hpee Town Hall by Chairman waygan at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, August <br /> 177 2011 and the Pledge of Allegiance was recited. <br /> Planning Board Members Present: Chairman Mary waygan, Vice Chair Joe Mullin, Cleric <br /> George Petersen, Dennis Balarini, David Kooharian <br /> Also Present: Tom 1*udala-Town Planner, Charles Rowley-Consultant Engineer <br /> APPROVAL of MPWM August 3, 2011 <br /> MOTION: Mr. Brini made a motion to accept the minutes of August 30 as written. The Chair referenced <br /> Section 8. Strategy-and Action Pian, page 51, for further review by the Planning Board. <br /> There was discussion and clarification about Policy 4 to read new businesses through tax <br /> incentive zoning incentives, r cture improvements and worker training." lir. Bal arini <br /> - � <br /> expressed interest in attracting businesses by improving access with the railroad. Mr. I ooharian <br /> agreed that railroad-improveme s should be a Cape policy, but not necessarily addressed by <br /> NWhpee. Mr. Petersen noted that should there be a specific business that could benefit from rail, <br /> there would then be a sponsor to improve raid awes for Mashpee, sine it would be a costly <br /> investment. <br /> Action A will remain as written. <br /> Regarding Action B, Mr. I ooharian inquired about the businesses desired by Mashpee and <br /> suggested the possibility of targeting those businesses desired by the Town and maldng.Mashpee <br /> more desirable to those businesses. Mr. Petersen referenced medical businesses, and the <br /> importance of considering the population, but cautioned against i g the market. lir. Petersen <br /> recommended targeting HUBZone businesses such a construction and engineering firms which <br /> g g <br /> may offer economic opportunities using federal funds. HUBZone .firms are located within an ETA <br /> area requiring the companies to hire employees from the area. Chairman Waygan recommended <br /> adding marketing to target specific companies in Policy 4 and it was suggested that text for Action <br /> begin with"Warket to preferred businesses. . ." while h.ing it further. There was <br /> referenced to SWOT page 41 dw highlighted eimerging indu t fies and b4r. Pudala indicated that he <br /> had a list of businesses in his files. There was further discussion about companies with government <br /> contracts and the medical industry and the growth of hospice and high end assisted living facilities. <br /> Mr. Petersen highlighted the challenge of Mashpee's location which does not have direct access to <br /> the highways, creating competition with other towns. Mr. I ooharian recommended not pursuing <br /> I <br />
