Affirmative Action Committee Minutes
Monday January 8, 2018
Ockway Meeting Room,Town Hall
Present: Human Resources Director Kim Landry,Selectman Sherman, Kim Morris,JoAnn Nadeau, Marie
Stevenson
Also Present: Town Clerk Deb Dami,Town Manager Rodney Collins
Town Clerk Deb Dami suggested that the committee be comprised of at least seven members with officers.
The HR Director will meet with Deb to draft a bylaw to create the committee. Deb also suggested that the
committee assign a board secretary to take the minutes. The HR Director will reach out to the board
secretaries. The last set of Affirmative Action Committee meeting minutes that Deb has on file are from
2009.
The Town Manager was present to address the committee. He thanked the new members forjoining and
provided some history on the committee and the need to re-energize it. He stated that the committee
should collectively decide what the mission/vision statement should be. He is available on an"as needed"
basis to interact with the group. He felt the. roles of the committee were both informational and
preventative. He stated that the committee should engage in a campaign to be sure that hateful
suggestions or comments are addressed or eliminated. If the committee, felt that any policies or
procedures needed to be revised he would welcome any suggestions.
The committee felt that inviting the Police Chief and the School Resources Officer to a meeting would be
beneficial in educating the committee on community concerns and actions at the schools. The school
principals would also be on the list to invite to a future meeting.
How does the committee let residents know that it exists? Visiting the COA and Mashpee TV were
discussed as options to have some visibility within the community.
The committee discussed other memberships that it felt would be advantageous for the group. It was
decided that the following individuals/groups would be contacted and invited to attend the next meeting
in hopes that they or a representative could join the committee:
1. Mashpee High School student—Marie will reach out to Celeste Reynolds to discuss
2. COA—Kim L.to discuss membership with COA Director, Lynne Waterman
3. Boys&Girls Club—Kim M.to reach out to them for recommendations for membership
4. Tribe—Kim L.to speak with Yvonne Tobey for suggested members
5. Human Services--Kim L.to speak with Gail Wilson, Human Services Coordinator
I
The committee reviewed the Affirmative Action policy statement. There were no suggested revisions from
committee members.
It was suggested that the committee invite a representative from Falmouth's "No Place for Hate"
committee to speak at a future meeting. They are a very active committee and even have a Facebook
page. Marie will be attending the MLK program that is sponsored by this group and will gather information
3
to share with the committee.
