Browner Administrator Environmental Protection Agency Washington,DC 20460 Dear Ms. Browner: The Board of Selectmen of the Town of Mashpee would like to go on record in support of Regional Administrator John P. DeVillars' Region One order which has been taken to protect public health and the environment until the military can demonstrate that its training activities are safe. Mashpee is a town abutting the MMR. We are acutely aware of the contamination emanating from the MMR and of the negative impacts it has had on our ' g water making it necessary to develop a townwide public water system; our values of our homes which has caused personal losses and a decrease to the overall value of our town; our neighborhoods which have been stigmatized by the contamination found under our homes; our beautiful ponds which are now suspect for both human use and natural habitat; and perhaps even our health which could have been damaged due to the contamination in our private wells and the indiscriminate practice of propellant bag burning. The base sits atop a single source aquifer which supplies water to the Cape towns. It is of critical importance to protect this water source from any further damage and to immediately address the problem of cleaning up the recently found contamination within this area. All efforts must be made to ensure the residents living in Mashpee that they will have pure ` and ample drinking water for the future.
