J r DEPARTMENT OF THE AIR FORCE
HEADQUARTERS AIR FORCE CENTER FOR ENVIRONMENTAL EXCELLENCE
INSTALLATION RESTORATION PROGRAM
OTIS AIR NATIONAL GUARD BASE,MA 02542-5028
dI
NEIGHBORHOOD NOTICE
August 19, 1997
The Air Force Center for Environmental Excellence (AFCEE) has received all of the test
results from private wells for 28 residences on Saddleback Road in Mashpee. Your
residence was one of those tested. The test results DID NOT show the presence of
ethylene dibromide (EDB) in your water supply. You will receive a written report of the
test within the next two to three weeks.
We also tested your well water for volatile organic compounds such as solvents and fuel.
We DID NOT find such chemicals that might be associated with groundwater
contamination from the base. We did find the chemical chloroform in all but one well
(#34 Saddleback Road), at very low levels ranging from 2 to 4 parts per billion. The safe
drinking water standard for chloroform is 100 parts per billion. Chloroform is commonly
found in private well water supplies on Cape Cod and poses no health risk at the low
s; levels detected.
Based on this information we feel that your water supply is safe and can be used for all
purposes. However, we will continue to provide you with bottled water and conduct at
least one more round of private well testing on Saddleback Road. The next sample
Y' collection will occur during the week of September 1st. Decisions on testing beyond that
point and the provision of bottled water will be made based upon the installation of two
groundwater monitoring wells north of Saddleback Road and the results from the next
round of private well testing. Work on one of those monitoring wells begins today.
Both monitoring wells should be completed in the next two to three weeks.
patience in this matter as we work quickly to better
We appreciate your cooperation and
understand the situation in the area.
