Shellfish Volunteer Program: Update on the Community Shellfish Action Program:
Fisher: "Our AmeriCorps Cape Cod service member Makayla Stepp-Davis, has been working very hard on
making up pamphlets and presentations for volunteer outreach sessions we have scheduled at the Mashpee
Public Library. So far we have scheduled two dates for the upcoming months. I will be meeting with the
Library staff to discuss presentation dates and options for recruiting volunteers. There is also a possibility of
holding an informational session here at the town hall in the near future.
The pamphlets that Makayla has produced are coming out really nice. They show information about the
propagation and water quality programs and the need for volunteer help. She also created a pamphlet that we
will be handing out with the new licenses this year on shellfish safety. This pamphlet includes safe handling
measures as well as some tasty recipes for each species of shellfish.
Once I have meet with the library staff and I have some dates set in stone, Sandy MacFarlane will be coming to
Mashpee to help us organize the first session. She has been involved with setting up several volunteer programs
across the Cape including the Yarmouth Shellfish Volunteer Program.
I will be attending the first Science Fair at the High School in 15 years. I will also be attending a career fair at
Cape Cod Community College.to recruit volunteers."
Holmes: "I have spoken at length with the Falmouth Rod and Gun Club, and they are more than willing to help
out in the future with gear construction. The club helped to construct gear for Chuck Martinsen (Shellfish
Constable) from Falmouth. We made oyster bags for the town's oyster propagation program."
Fisher: "The volunteer program is going to be structured like the Barnstable BARS program. A small group of
highly involved volunteers will head the program in the future. I will jumpstart the program, but I hope to step
back and have a select few manage it in the future."
Capital Improvement- Ockway Landing Building
So far the area near the town landing has been cleared and all stumps have been removed. The back area will
need some fill and grading to be ready for the plan paving and parking lot to be ready by this boating season.
The Department of Natural Resources has submitted revised plans for a 42' x 50' steel building to be located
at the back of the lot. The plans and price quotes will be reviewed by the Community Preservation Committee
on February the 11' 2019. The area will be used as a central location for the lab, gear construction, and gear
storage. The building will allow the shellfish division staff to construct gear and perform maintenance on
shellfish upweller infrastructure regardless of the weather..
Thomas' "Maybe we could also use C.P.C. funds to install cameras and a tower at this site? Should we talk to
the IT department about that possibility?"
York: "We have talked to the IT department regarding our need, unfortunately we would need a repeater at a
location for a camera system. Maybe the tower can be put in this location when they start to build. The tower
would need to be able to come in line with the town landing to have an adequate signal."
Thomas: "Talk to the IT department. Timing is everything and now with recent violations there is an evident
need."
York: "Zoning maybe an issue in the area, but they are currently updating the town wide system so we can
inquire."
