M shpee waterways Commission <br /> December 9,2009 Meeting Minutes <br /> The meeting was called to order by Chairman Ken Bates at 9:0 AM in Meeting <br /> Room <br /> , Mashpee Town Hall <br /> Present :den Bates, Tim Leedham, William Taylor, Jerry Daly, Steve Pinard <br /> Absent: Perry Ellis <br /> Others present: Rick York, Shellfish Constable, Al wiekel <br /> Motion to approve the November 12, 2009, fleeting Minutes as corrected at the meeting <br /> by Rick York was made by Tiny Leedharn, 2 na by Gerry Daly,, unanimou l approved. <br /> y pp <br /> Iden Bates reported that the Personnel Committee had met with and interviewed Al <br /> wiekel, resident of 1 lashpee, for the open position on the Waterways Commission. The <br /> Committee recommended that Mr Wrekel be approved to fill this opening. motion to <br /> recommend the appointment of Mr wiekel to the open position of the Waterways <br /> Commission was made by William Taylor, 2 d by Tim Leedharn, and unanimously <br /> approved. The Burd of Selectmen will be notified of thi �aetion and asked to approve. <br /> Committee Reports: <br /> Harbormaster Report: No report as Mr Perry.Ellis was unable to attend the <br /> muting <br /> Shellfish R�eort: Rick York, Shellfish Constable reported the <br /> p ter <br /> Sbellfishing season opened December 1. This season, the town switched fromY ster <br /> trays to oyster beds. Shellfish and Harbormaster personnel assisted people needing help <br /> p g p <br /> harvesting the oysters. Approximdtely the same number of people began this season a1 <br /> n <br /> the past, however the number of new shellfish permits required for harvesting had <br /> � g <br /> increased. Expanded seeding took place this year with more than I million seed. <br /> Because oyster heck can now be used for seeding, the program can be expanded. Mr <br /> York will be seeking additional funds for more oyster seed for next year. <br /> Pponest Bay: Tiny Needham was not on the water the past month and <br /> reported that not much activity had been noted. Mr Bates reported that he had attended a <br /> "Spit Review Meeting" during which a presentation was made by the "Save The Bay" <br /> organization. <br /> Maintenance Dredging: Ken Bates reported that the County Dredge asked <br /> approval of their desire to conduct a dredge project in Barnstable before setting p u and <br /> conducting the dredge project for the outside channel of Popponesset Bay scheduled for <br /> 11/20. The request was granted and it was anticipated that the I ash ee dredge project <br /> for the outside channel of Popponesset Bay will start this week. <br /> . <br /> Dredge Date/State: Ken Bates reported that a follow up meeting with State <br /> officials had been scheduled for next week. Participants are anticipating that more <br /> progress will be made towards the objective of a reversal of the States earlier ruling , <br /> which narrower} dredge date windows as previously established for maintenance dredge <br /> projects for the entire State but more importantly for Cape Cod and the Islands. <br />
