r -
Town o Alash ee
1
6 Great Xeck Road Ao
0Mshpce, Massac]IUSNIS02649
October 10, 1996
Strckalc vley & Hoit, laic., Architects
1 North Strect
I ligha i, I lra. 02043
AIM. Roger er Hoit
I Have C011dU ted a walk thl-OLlorh in the above bUilding and round some
qUe tioiiable items. The steel work to say the least. is below high qUality workmanship.
The leckhig slot welds have more than a few burn throughs, steel beans are short and
licad to have field Feld splices added, the welds are not the best I have seen, beams were
misali tied w4h bolt holes, it appears sonic roof beams are short and others may not be
properly aligned. Uider 730 CMR Section 127 I arra requiring a full certified report by
strLietural engineer before the steel is covered.
I question the single metal steel studs for the door frames for long lasting rigidity
Nvithout having plaster cracking or door problem later on ail doors, but especially on the
iglu walls. Are stud braces required between studs?I have a serious reserve about
deflection ofthe roof with the studs being fastened directly to the underside ofroofing and
roof framing without slip joint or channel design. We should see a structural engineer's
report on the roof deflection and the effect on the walls.
Walking through the buildsg I found grater in the town clerks ogee, the personnel
office and "vet walls and block in scattered areas but especially tine personnel wall. I would
expect some of that vet hisulation to be removed. The whole building is to be
eathertlg ht with the new roofs on and the interior areas are to be thoroughly dried before
any further insulation or sheet rock is installed .
Thanks for your cooperation.
Sincerely,
Williwn F. Hauck
Inspector of Buildings
