Cemetery Commission
August 27, 2018
Members Present: Ernest Virgilio
Mike Scirpoli
Members Absent: Charlie Hinckley
Others: Rodney Collins, Town Manager
Wayne Taylor, Assistant Town Manager
Catherine Laurent, DPW Director
Jean Clark
Sandy Xenos
Linda Xenos Gillooly
Edward Skane
The meeting was opened at 4:35 pm.
Approval of Minutes
The minutes from the August 16, 2017 meeting were approved by a vote of 2-0.
Enforcement of Cemetery Regulations—Section XI G. Decoration of Plots
Catherine explained that the regulations have always prohibited planting of shrubs/bushes but
enforcement has been lax. A number of plots now have overgrown shrubs that are encroaching
onto adjacent plots. Photos showing examples were shared.
The Town Manager stated that he has received a number of calls;this is a very emotional issue.
He recommended the Commission consider "grandfathering" existing plots with shrubs/bushes
provided they are maintained by the plot owner and do not encroach onto other plots.
Planting of new shrubs/bushes would be prohibited and this prohibition would be enforced.
Existing shrubs that become unsightly or don't comply would be removed.
Jean Clark said the shrubs on her plot have been there for years and objects to having them
removed.
Sandy Xenos agreed. She appreciates the maintenance/care of the cemetery by DPW and
understands the issue but feels there should be an exception of plot owners such as herself and
Jean who visit the cemetery daily and maintain their plantings.
Ernie mentioned that he is personally familiar with the cemetery so understands the sentiments
but explained that there has to be rules to set reasonable controls and prevent maintenance
issues. Catherine noted the rules are posted at the entrance to the cemetery and are
distributed when a plot is purchased.
Sandy Xenos and Ed Skane both offered to work with the Town; everyone is interested in
maintaining the cemetery and keeping it looking beautiful.
