Cemetery Commission
September 20, 2018
Members Present: Ernest Virgilio
Mike Scirpoli
Members Absent: Charlie Hinckley
Others: Catherine Laurent, DPW Director
The Commission conducted a site visit at 2:30 pm at Great Neck Woods Cemetery.
The meeting was convened immediately following at 3:15 pm in the Ockway Meeting Room at
Town Hall.
Discussion of Cemetery Regulations—Section XI G. Decoration of Plots
The Commission discussed a possible amendment to Section XI G.1. to allow plantings within 12
inches to the front and side of the headstone. Mike suggested allowing plantings within width
of plot adjacent to headstone. This width would vary depending on the size of the plot.
The Commission also discussed a possible amendment to Section XI G.2. to allow shrubs on the
side of a headstone if planted within this area, provided height of shrubs did not exceed height
of headstone and provided the shrub does not encroach on the adjacent plots.
The Commission agreed that with any amendment, there would not be "grandfathering" for
existing plot owners. Everyone would be expected to comply.
From their site visit, the Commission is still concerned with ornaments and other items left on
plots such as golf balls, statues, etc.. These items are a challenge for maintenance.
The Commission requested scheduling another site visit with the Town Manager and a member
of the Board of Selectmen so they can see firsthand these concerns and challenges.
Next Meeting
To be determined.
The meeting adjourned at 3:45 pm.
Respectively submitted,
Catherine Lauren
DPW Director
