MINUTES June 11, 1992 4 BOARD of HEALTH
worth of pollution O rl "We have seen situations very similar
to this one and in at least two instances in the more immedi-
ate area. " "It was expected, in one of those areas, that the
landfill was the problem so a hydrogeology study was per-
formed. "Because of its location,, proximal to two ponds and
their groundwater divided was very dynamic, most of the ni-
trates in those areas were -scribed to cross circuiting of
ones own septic system or a neighbors. " 'Periodically dif-
ferent rain patterns during the year would shift either right
across the well or slightly off the well explaining the wide
degree of nitrates. " "The area we are talking about is near
a pond so undoubtedly the groundwater flow in the area is in-
fluenced by pond level. " "Another possible explanation is
agricultural practices in the past however, that -is seemingly
void .as most Of the. lots that were first tested came out with
clean water then further down the road tested high in ni-
trates. "
i-
trates. " "This would indicate between the time of major de-
velopment, in that area and now, we have had some change in
agricultural practices, 11 "It would be our contention at this
point that the problem does not emanate from an agricultural
practice that being, a cranberry bog. " ' 'Animal waste sewer-
age practices are minimal in the area. " 'gone other possible
explanation . is there have been limited soil borings to the
point that could confirm there may be clay lenses, meaning
the water may be drawing from the layer above that layor
which is collecting sewerage. 11 w
Mr. Greelish questioned Mr., Heufelder as to whether- the
slightly elevated levels of sodium. found in the water levels
could -have any correlation to the high nitrates counts
Mr. Heufelder responded, sodium is very variable, as far
as, sodium concentrations in wastewater and is difficult to
trace. "
Mr. Heufelder explained to residents the possible health
risks- associated wit n'i trat' s and° available. options e
t
*
A concerned resident qquestioned Nor. Rich as to the ap-
proximate time frame water service could be brought down to
service the -subdivision. ,
A. i
Mr., Rich -responded, presently the management plan is in
the process of- being updated. "The management plan will be
completed some- time time this su mer. t1 R11 ter~ duality is our main
priority. 11 'IT date we- have nothing on file which designates
the antuitWoods subdivision as having water quality prob-
lems. 11 "1 mould suggest the residents approach the. dater
Commissioner's and inform thea of the water quality
problems."
