i u
MINUTES December ,! 1992 13 % BOARD OF HEALTH
T
Mr. McGrath commented, ' the maximum Title v removal is
36 percent, assuming ,there is s ate denitrification occurring
in the leaching field" . "What I have been comparing consis-
tently is that there is 65 percent removal from the house to
the distribution box however, there will be some more removed
in the leaching field. " "As a very conservative number there
is probably an increase of 30 percent removal .
Mr. Doherty questioned system maintenance, "One concern
of this board is the filter media plugging up or a blowout.
Mr, McGrath stated, "this was designed to have very
little maintenance" . 'The loading rate is less than 2 gallons
per square foot per day. " After four years, four months, the
system in Falmouth was excavated down to the inlet of the
"Ruck" filter~ and there was no clogging whatsoever. " Fused
on that, we predicted that it would have a failure of some-
where between 20 and 30 years, " "If it does fail it's a re-
moval of that upper layer and replacement of new sand with
the existing filters being reused, " 1120 to 30 years is just
projection used on having no failure- "
Mr. Devereux, abutter, questioned why all the experimen-
tal lots were one acre or more.
Mr. McGrath explained, "I needed a willing party that
lip would allow periodic inspections for four years" . "I paid
for the reconstruction of his septic system and it just hap-
pened to be a friend who was agreeable to all this, "
Mr, Devereux questioned Mr. McGrath as to whether there
is any reason why this system will not function on this small
piece of property.
Mr, McGrath responded, "no" .
Mr. Devereux questioned whether there will be any odors
coming out of the vents.
Mr. McGrath explained, "one gent goes up through the
roof and will be tied into the plumbing stackil . "The other
vent will be installed at ground level . "It can be in-
stalled -anyplace, as long as, the air can get into it, so it
can be disguised by landscaping. " "The times I have been
near those vents in Falmouth there has been no oder. " "When
e uncovered the system, even though the filter was being
loaded by active sewerage, there was no odor. " "The smell of
sewerage comes from the anerobic conditions when it's in the
septic tank, but when it's in an airoblc condition there
should be very little odor. "
