Mashpee - Wakeby Lake Management
Committee
July 23 2019
7:30 PM
Mashpec Town Hall
Meeting called by: Debi McManus
Type of meeting: Monthly
Secretary Barbara B. Nichols
Attendees: Members: Brian Mauro, Donald MacDonald, Barbara Nichols, Mike Rapacz
Guests: Jeffrey Smith, Harbormaster
The minutes of the June 25, 2019 meeting were accepted as written after a motion by Brian Mauro and
second by Don MacDonald.
Agenda topics
[Agenda topic 1] Lake level
Discussion: Barbara took the lake levels on Julylst and 15"' Both times it was 55.8 feet above sea
level. There were 19 and 15 inches of water flowing over the board closest to the lake, and 14 and 13
inches of water in the stream by the stairs. Barbara brushed off and cleaned both gauges so they could be
more easily read. The metal gauge on the near side is becoming worn to the point where it is difficult to
read. Barbara notified Drew McManus in Conservation and asked if he could have it replaced.
Barbara measured 6.1 inches of rain in her rain gauge during the past month.
The brush and poison ivy remain on the path.
Conclusions: The lake remains high for this time in the summer due to high precipitation.
[Agenda topic 2] Harbormaster
Discussion: We were glad to meet Jeffrey Smith, our new Harbormaster, who is working with 9 assistants.
He gave a brief history, and talked about his work with the Coast Guard along the east coast.
He also mentioned his plans for the Department. He stresses education and verbal warnings unless there
is a safety issue or flagrant violation. He will pursue ramp repair with Doug Cameron at the State level.
Members told him they were pleased with the added coverage on the lake.
Boaters seem to be following the rules of navigation, although jet skiers have been noted out on the lake
after 7 PM. Two were stopped by the Harbormaster at 7:45 PM.
Conclusions: Jeff Smith, Harbormaster attended and we exchanged information.
