Committee Members' Outside Activities Reporting-Ms. Johnson-Graham shared her
experience attending the Massachusetts Breast Cancer Coalition Board and there was discussion
about the Lesbian and Friends Dance on October 26 in Brookline. .
Student Representative Update-The Chair referenced discussion in July, and listed on
the agenda, regarding wording to change student membership to include"up to two students
from Mashpee." It had come to the Chair's attention that, because a motion was made without a
formal vote on July 9,the request could not be forwarded. Ms. Johnson-Graham asked about
calling for a motion during this meeting, but the Chair had been advised that it could only be
added if it was an emergency. The Chair would add it to the agenda for the next meeting.
Human Rights Club/Academy-The Chair confirmed that there would be a Human
Rights Academy, taking place on October 30 at Cape Cod Academy, and Mashpee would be
represented. Aphrodite Purdy would serve as the Advisor to the reinstated Human Rights Club
and the Chair would serve as a chaperone for the event. The Chair distributed and read the
Club's mission statement for any comments Committee members might suggest. Ms. Waterman
suggested wording to reflect the mission of the newly named Barnstable County Human Rights
Advisory Commission. The Chair explained the year-long student project. Ms. Waterman
recommended that the Human Rights Club could match their language with the Barnstable
County Human Rights Advisory Commission. There was consensus that diversity was more
than race and color. Ms. Nadeau inquired how best the MIDC could assist the Club and there
was discussion about an MIDC member potentially attending Human Rights Club meetings.
NEW BUSINESS
Future Initiatives-The Chair inquired about additional initiatives and referenced an
email she sent about"The Faces of Diversity" exhibit at Falmouth Academy, and suggested a
similar project in Mashpee. Ms.Nadeau recommended contacting Bill Nay at the t.v. station,
who had expressed interest in hearing from everyone in Town, including if someone preferred
not to appear in front of a microphone, but in a way that a voice could be heard but not seen. In
addition. Ms. Nadeau suggested a monthly series of speakers, during the winter, featuring faces
of diversity. The Chair inquired whether speakers would be willing to speak at no cost, since
there was no budget. It was suggested that monthly programming may be too often and perhaps
quarterly speakers may be another option. Ms. Waterman suggested the Committee first connect
with who was in the diverse community, to gain a better understanding, and then see if they
would be willing to speak publicly at an event. Ms. Waterman also suggested connecting with
the Barnstable County Advisory Commission and their new Coordinator Deborah Battles, and
the ways in which they would be helping municipalities.
MOTION: A motion was made by Ms. Johnson-Graham to have Deb Battles from the
Barnstable County Human Rights Advisory Commission present for the next meeting. Ms.
Brown seconded the motion. All voted unanimously.
There was further discussion regarding working with Mr.Nay and the possibility of developing a
program with him. There was discussion about the value of recording stories, as well as the
stories and challenges of individuals fighting addiction. There was consensus that Ms.Nadeau
would invite Mr.Nay to the December 10 meeting.
3
