•_f
The State might make us use the much higher numbers (Title V). They are developing these
figures for the water Resources element of the Local Comprehensive Flan.
Brad said those numbers will tell the volumes for each area and we will then know what the
maximum volume, size of system that has to go in that area.
South Mashpee Area: Torn thought it would make sense to have cluster de-nitrifying systems
there but if we find out they won't work because of the seasonality, we may have to reconsider.
The Santuit Fond area has the most year round.residents, but it is also the poorest area of town
and therefor least able to afford a sewage system.
The members reviewed the information Torn received from the conference on de-nitrifying
systems.
-Re-circulating sand filter. requires a second septic tank and a sand filter. Sand filters take up a
lot of space so are not good for small lots. It is not a patented system so prices vary.
-Renco trickling Ater: $ , oo in addition to cost of Title v system.
-Biolclere: if it is heavily managed, can get nitrogen don to ten parts per million, otherwise it
is about 20 parts. Hundreds have been installed in Europe. It uses foam blocks as the media
which the bacteria grows on. $5,,000-61,000 in additional cost.. Can be used for multiple homes.
Brad said who would be responsible for maintenance, if used for multiple homes.?
Tom said the town would own the system.
Brad asked what the maintenance costs are?
Tory does not have any figures for those costs.
- waterlue bio filter: no cost figures. was developed to remove B -biological oxygen
demand.
.RUCK system: is a very complicated system. Needs re-piping on the house. $7,000-8,000 in _
additional costs. There is one in New Seabu.ry.
For any technology that has a pump, there must be a 2 year mw'ntenance contract for the pumps,
by a licenced treatment plant operator at a cost of$200-3 per year.
-FAST: was originally used on ships. Uses ultraviolet light for disinfection. Removes nitrogen
by pumping air into the septic tank. Needs a 21,000gallon septic tank(most are 1,500 gallons)
and an additional S5,500. Because it has a pwnp it will require the maintenance program.
-Arnphidro e: various size units. Very expensive for individual single family home units. More
cost effective for cluster systems. There is one installed in waluoit. Modifications are needed
to the septic tank. Toni thought this system and bioclere would be best for cluster systems in
town.
-Chromaglass: $7,550-7,8000 additional cost.
-Feat system: the leaching area is peat moss, packed very tightly. Excellent BOD removal. Is
used a lot in Maine. They are not sure how this works on nitrogen because there is a lot of
acidity in the peat. The presenters at the conference were not very enthusiastic about this
system.
- -nitrification barrier: a silt loam and saw dust layer, which is the carbon source for the
bacteria. However that gets used up in a few gears. It is difficult to get the correct silt loam
mixture. Also not enthusiastic about this systems.
