... ry
...ow oy
°,'..qr
2rotivn of_lashpee
SheCftsh Commission 16 great Neck Road North
RY`YUt,C G0"
Mashpee, NA 02649
MINUTES OF MEETING 4-9-19
Attendance:
Peter Thomas, Steven Marques, Darryl Christensen, Bill Holmes, Ashley Fisher and Richard York.
Public: Michael Ronhock, and Amy Squeglia
Convene Meeting: 7:00 PM
Public Comment: Amy Squeglia: Owns a paddle boarding company, and is interested in volunteering for
Mashpee's Shellfish Propagation Program.
Approval of Minutes: 3-12-19
York"We are getting a 1,000 oyster bags for 2019,not 2,000. There was also no MOU for the 300,000 oysters
donated to use from Brewster. Finally, the Shoestring Bay oyster reefs are not part of a Shellfish Grant, they
were put into place using grant monies awarded to the Tribe from the Environmental Protection Agency. I just
wanted to clarify that in the minutes."
Motion: Marques made a motion to approve the 3-12-2019 minutes with suggested edits. Christensen seconded
the motion. All voted unanimously in favor.
Shellfish Constable's Report
Over the past month we have conducted interviews for two vacancies within the Shellfish Department.
One for a full-time year round position, and the other for a part-time 30 hours per week year round position.
There was an article submitted to the selectman's office to appear in the next town meeting warrant to increase
the 30 hour part-time position to full time (May 61h 2019 special and annual town meeting). The person who
fills one position will take over as the Deputy Shellfish Constable and the other would take on the position as
the full time shellfish and water quality technician. Both positions will currently keep the job title as Waterways
Assistant. Both individuals will be deputized as assistants to the shellfish constable, and both will be involved in
shellfish propagation. We are thrilled to gain the extra help in order to increase our patrol efforts and shellfish
seed in the water for 208 compliance.
This last month we focused on splitting the remainder of remote set bags in the Mashpee River, so far
the large propagation area and the area surrounding Orsini Beach are complete. Our new southern propagation
site in the Mashpee River still has approximately 10 trays to split prior to the summer blooms. Our AmeriCorps
member Makayla Stepp-Davis and I have also started to construct our new remote set bags for 2019. We plan to
hold a large volunteer day at the Dennis Transfer station early in May to fill the cultch bags to be delivered to
the hatchery in early June. We also built a new table in order to have extra shoots available for a larger group of
volunteers.
Committee Comments:
Thomas: "How many bags are we ordering for this next year?"
Fisher: "1,000 bags"
Marques: "When can we start making the bags?"
