What's the next step?
The Cape Cod Water Protection Collaborative and Cape towns are working with the
State to develop limits on nitrogen and other substances in estuaries, and to propose
solutions for our wastewater problems. Any solution will include the identification
and purchase of property for new treatment plants, and/or property easements for
collection, treatment and recharge of wastewater.
Once the systems are constructed and operating, environmental monitoring will
ensure that the systems work and the estuaries are regaining their health.
We are not in this alone. The State Department of Environmental Protection has
been monitoring the estuaries, and has expertise we can draw upon. In addition,
every Cape Cod community is dealing with a nitrogen problem of its own. This means
while our own town is busy tailoring solutions to fit our community, neighboring towns
will be doing the same. We will collectively benefit from sharing information and
experience . . . and the watershed will, too.
What role can 1 play?
If you have read this far, you have already
begun. Keeping informed about they
problem and the solutions is the key. If .
you can, you should attend public w
hearings, support town efforts to clean up
wastewater and let your public officials
know you care about restoring the health
of the estuaries. You can also become
involved as a volunteer, participating in
water quality monitoring and shoreline
cleanup. www.CapeKeepers.com has lots '
of information and is continually updated
to keep you current.
s Prese,*.t,
p
The Cape Cod Water Protection Collaborative thanks Three Bays Preservation,
Inc.,which provided some text and all graphics for this brochure.
p ,$5
r'!P• cyt$
Obtutt.Mat5`o
www.CapeKeepers.com
