Page I of I
Tom F.Fudala
From: Mark Nelson[mnelson@horsleywitten.com]
Sent: Friday,November 12,2010 4.25 PM
To: Tom F.Fudala;Catherine Laurent;Joyce M.Mason
Cc: Adrienne Danner;Andrew Singer
Subject:Breezy Acres sewer line location.
Catherine and Tom,
The Horsley Witten Group,Inc.(HW)has completed the survey for the design of the sewer line from
Breezy Acres to the Mashpee High School. Based on this survey,it appears that it will be difficult to
place the sewer line the right of way for Old Barnstable Road and Route 151 as discussed previously.,
First, the layout for Old Barnstable Road is narrow, and is not much wider than the paved surface of the
road.. To stay in the layout of the road, the sewer will have to be below the paved portion of the road.
In fact it will have to run on the opposite side of the road to avoid the water line on the eastern side of
the road. This increases the complexity and cost of the construction and makes it more difficult for the
Town to develop additional sewer connections in the future. On Route 151,there is a 12 in,gas main on
the same side of the road where we would like to put the sewer line. To avoid the gas line safely
(staying about 10 feet away),we need to be on the High School property instead of in the road layout.
The sewer could run just inside the property line, leaving a vegetated buffer between it and Route 151.
Our engineers have had preliminary conversations with National Grid regarding the gas main, and they
have expressed concerns about construction in proximity to this line.
I wanted to bring these issues to your attention and see if keeping the sewer line on the High School
property is acceptable to the town. I think it avoids construction issues now,and provides the Town
greater flexibility for future connections as well.
Andrew Singer, the attorney representing HAC for the Breezy Acres project has submitted a draft
wastewater agreement. This draft included a plan showing the sewer line in the road right of way,
completed prior to our recent survey. A revised plan showing the survey and utility data, and the line on
the High School property is attached here.
Thank you for looking this over and please let us know if you have any questions.
Mark
Mark E.Nelson,P.G.,LSP
Principal
Horsley Witten Group
90 Route 6A
Sandwich,MA 02563
(508)833-6600
(508)833-3150-fax
mnelson@horsleywitten.com
www.horsleywitten.com
11/16/2010
