20
The department has handled a big increase in violations
with a lot of effort being given to investigation in order to
present our citizens with results which give them a little
satisfaction. During the summer months the workload is
greatly increased by the presence of our summer population
and tourists who demand a lot of attention which we really
cannot afford to give with our manpower and close budget,
but we do as much as we can as courteously as possible.
The police. department has considered the great volume
of work anticipated with the development of the South Cape
Beach by the state, with no provisions for the added ex-
pense. In the future I am in hopes of getting some full time
help and an increase in our budget so we can cut down our
appearances in -court. A police department is not measured
by its convictions in a court room, but by the trouble it pre-
vents and the order it keeps. I think you all understand that
we are all confronted with a big job as our transients are
more and varied. The two armed robberies at Jim's Package
Store will readily confirm this as these are the first in the
history of the town of Mashpee and happened in a very short
period.
We have to give a lot of thanks to the Bureau of Crim-
inal Investigation from the Sheriff's office at Barnstable for
its assistance, which we greatly appreciate, in carrying out
our job more effectively. We accepted delivery of our new
Ford police cruiser on December 13, 1960, which was in great
demand as the present cruiser was in poor condition.
I want to take this time to thank the Board of Select-
men, Finance Committee, Town Auditor, and all the other
town officials for their assistance during our first and most
trying year, and we look forward to a better ensuing year.
f! The following is a list of arrests and complaints investi-
gated and acted upon. There were a total of 40 arrests made
for these various offenses committed.
i Assault and battery cases investigated 10
' Assault and threat with gun cases investigated 5
Auto accidents investigated 40
