17
Report of the Board of Selectmen
Again this year as in the past, people in increasing num-
bers are finding Mashpee a most attractive community in
which to live. Building construction continues at a rapid pace
with $1,800,000.00 in new construction this year, including a
new quarter million dollar telephone exchange and relay sta-
tion to be completed in the spring of 1970. Eventually this
will place the entire town under one telephone exchange and
extend our local dialing to Bourne and Osterville. We extend
our welcome to the new business ventures adding to the
growth in services at the shopping center with the addition l ',
of a barber shop, beauty shop and children's wear shop.
The Seconsett Island Road project under Chapter 90 is
still under construction. The original proposal has been re-
vised and two 5 foot culverts are to be replaced by a 14 foot
9 inch culvert to contain two feet of water at low tide. It is
our hope that the increased volume flow of water will help
to alleviate the algae problem in Waquoit Bay.
Chapter 81 highway projects have been completed and
the traffic lights at the school crossings have been installed.
Street lights were installed where requested and our Christ-
mas lights were displayed as usual at the Mashpee Rotary
Circle.
During the past year a new police cruiser and two way
portable radios for the Police and Fire Departments were
purchased.
The Swafford property located on Mashpee Neck has
been purchased for use as a boat landing. We are hopeful
that the townspeople will vote this year to purchase the ad- r
jacent parcel of land so that we may expand and improve
this facility.
We again this year will ask the townspeople to -appro-
priate $30,000.00 for the stabilization fund as our need for
new municipal buildings increases.
We are pleased to report that the Town of Mashpee has
regained its status as a self-governing municipality within
the Commonwealth, through the termination of appointment
