Propagation
Oyster tray maintenance is ongoing in the Mashpee River as we continue to harvest from the area
throughout the conditionally open season (November 1st—March 31st). Roughly 300 pecks of oysters
were harvested at Mashpee Neck Landing during the month of December.
Different year classes are being separated/culled and damaged trays are being removed and repaired
for the upcoming 2020 remote set seed order. Oysters have been ordered for the 2020 growing season:
460,000 R3 oysters and 1,000 remote set oyster bags will be received in late June-early July.
Quahog nets remain in place and no damages have been seen.Special brooms were ordered to
effectively clean nets that have become fouled over the winter. The Shellfish Division will have 11.0
million quahogs on order for the 2020 growing season. This requires gear maintenance and the
installation of 3 new FLUPSYs in Ockway. Power and water services are still needed at that location.
Rental space was found for quahog and oyster tray construction in the Mashpee Commons. This will
allow the Shellfish Division to complete necessary gear maintenance over the winter.A mesh break and
pneumatic tools are on order to complete all projects more efficiently. Two group projects have been
scheduled with AmeriCorps Cape Cod and the Barnstable Sheriff's office to help reach our gear
construction goals.
Water Quality
The Shellfish Division spent a total of 12 hours collecting and sampling for water quality. On December
the 11th the Shellfish Division conducted the routine sampling of five sentinel stations in Mashpee,
which are taken monthly year-round. Santuit was noted to have skim ice at the surface at the time of
sampling. Saltwater temperatures ranged from 6-8 degrees Celsius. Freshwater temperatures ranged
from 5-6 degrees Celsius.
The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe has received government surplus water quality monitoring equipment
which will be received in the near future. Two YSI 6600 sondes were on this list which will be extremely
helpful to the town. All water quality monitoring devices are out of the water due to damages, and
probe membrane failure. The Santuit EXO is the only device still deployed and functioning properly.
Old Business:
0 S' ON
