39
Report of the Veterans' Agent
To the Honorable Board of Selectmen
Town of Mashpee
Massachusetts
Gentlemen:
The following is a report of the Department of Veterans'
Services for the Town of Mashpee for the calendar year 1954.
The original appropriation for the year 1954 was $2,800.00.
This was a reduction of $500.00 from the previous year. As
there had been a surplus during the past years, I did not think
it necessary to request as large an appropriation, for I was
endeavoring to curtail the expenditures of the Department
without depriving any worthy applicant of any benefits that
were justly due him.
As the year neared its completion, it was quite evident
that the appropriation would be insufficient to meet the
demands. Therefore, it was necessary to request an addi-
tional $1,300.00 for Veterans' Benefits. Of this amount, there
was a balance of $89.00 which made the total expenditures
for the year for Veterans' Benefits $4,011.00. This additional
expenditure was due primarily to unforeseen deaths in the
community which resulted in added expenditures for the
Widows and medical expenses which were a direct result of
these deaths.
The Town will be reimbursed $2,005.50 which is 50% of
the expenditures of Veterans' Benefits. This is the maximum
amount that could be allowed by the Commonwealth for re-
imbursement for Veterans' Benefits.
