Mashpee Community Television updates—Bill Nay Things are great. Senator Ed
Markey introduced a bill to protect community television. Essentially, the proposed bill
states that franchise fees are money only and that the value of channels accessed cannot
be counted towards the fees. Bill Nay will send a letter of support once there is a bill
number.
State bill H4045 essentially says the State can received money from the streaming
companies (Amazon, Hulu, etc...). It should not affect the consumers, unless Amazon
(example)were to increase their rates. 12 or so states have successfully passed this bill.
Dan Riley mentioned Verizon was unbundling their services and that it will be interesting
to see if they unbundle TV content. Bill Nay said they have announced it, but no details
yet.
