Mr. Schiff gave
a brief overview of Pierce'Co\e's history and qualifications and then each member of the team gave a synopsis of their
experience and interest in the Town Seal project.
Chair David Weeden stated that the Town is looking forward to working with the firm.
Discussion of Results of the Town Seal Survey with Design Services Consultant
The Town Seal committee shared the results of the Town Seal Survey with the Pierce-Cote team and that the results were
much as the Town Seal Committee expected they would be. Brian VVeeden shared that he was the petitioner that first
brought the redesign of the Town Seal to Town Meeting and went over the history of why a redesign is needed. Mainly
that the seal needed to be rid of items such as the sword over the head of the Native- American and to be unique from
the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Seal.
Mr. Schiff asked for the "flavor" is of what the Committee wants to depict:
It was suggested that it should depict the vision statement of the Town, show that K4ashpee is a connected community,
show that Mashpee, formerly"Massipee",is the land of"large water",sun, turtle, "People of the First Light",quahog shell,
wampum, hawk or eagle heather, cranberries, plants, animals, depict a woman and a man?, fishing. Simplicity, sense of
community, honor Wampanoag traditions and history but recognize that the Town is made up of diverse people living in
harmony.
it was revealed that the Latin on the current seal translates to: By the sword we seek peace, but peace only under liberty"
