After school activities and
vacation periods can limit his ability to build skills and form relationships. Chase usually
needs an aide with him and that costs money. Ms. Blackburn recommends the program
MERGE which offers training within a community to define what inclusion really means. How
can programs like summer camps or the Boys and Girls Club adapt? Are there ways to
include Chase without the added personal expense of hiring an aide?
Members of the Committee responded. Ms. Nadeau thanked Ms. Blackburn for sharing this
valuable information. Cheyenne added that Chase is a light to our Community and likes the
term Diversability. Mr. Klein asked how we could help. Ms. Blackburn suggests that we ask,
what real inclusion really looks like? Remain mindful about what you see but what you do not
see. All of us are servants. Ms. Johnson- Graham referred to a member of her family who
progressed from a wheelchair to walking. She expressed gratitude for the presentation. The
Chair suggested members attend Conversations That Matter online.
ADDITIONAL TOPICS
The Chair reported that the next meeting will use a different format so that members of the
Community can attend to consider programs for June, which include Race Amity Day,
Juneteenth, and PRIDE month.
NEXT MEETING
Tuesday, May 11, 2021 at 10:00a.m.
ADJOURNMENT
At 11:30a.m. Mr. Klein made a motion to adjourn, which was seconded by Mr. Kupferman.
