Mr.Thomas said writing grants is an art form and it would be in the Town's interest in to hire a full time
grant writer.
2. Shellfish Constable Report
Mr.McElligatt introduced Sydney Crook who was reclassified from a seasonal employee to Shellfish and
Water Quality Technician for the Town. She will try to engage more people in town and has already put
together a brochure with QR codes titled"Mashpee Natural Resources:A Guide to Water Quality and
Shellfish in Mashpee Town Waters".
The recent storm caused a delay in the State coming out to test, but the oyster fishery is now open.We
had 10,000 oysters out,67 full packs came out on Saturday and 23 on Sunday. We stocked again
yesterday and today. So far we had 20-21k oysters and have taken our 9-1 Ik.This is the first year of
getting single oysters. We still have a good chunk to put out,I think we'll come close to putting
everything out.
Everything on the farm stayed in place during the storm, nothing moved an inch.
The water temperature is really high for November this year. The worry is if the temperature plunges too
quickly, they won't have time to go into hibernation. We're worried about mortality if there's a cold snap.
We're in winter mode right now, currently redoing the upwellers. We need a new pump, just not sure
where the money would come from. Mr.Thomas said we should talk more about that and find a way to
get the money.
Mr.McElligatt is aiming to have the updated Shellfish Regulations done by the next meeting so we'll
have a month to review and discuss at the January meeting.
Mr.Thomas asked Mr. Cook and Mr.McElligatt to speak about the site visit they did with some Town
Hall employees.Mr.Cook said it was a positive experience and it was great to see Town Officials witness
firsthand what goes on out there. It helps them to see where the money goes.
Mr.McElligatt said they have 1.7 million under nets, not sure where we'll put next year's stuff,it will be
a couple summers before we can get what's currently under nets out.We could continue to expand on the
sand bar,or we could use more aquaculture in town to help with nitrogen removal. Another option is to
scrap the current system of quahogs and oysters and have"oyster years"and"quahog years".
Mr.Thomas said we should get more aquaculture grants out there.
Mr.Cook said we should do a site visit and crunch some numbers.
ADDITIONAL TOPICS
(This space is reserved for topics that the Chairman did not reasonably anticipate would be discussed)
N/A
ADJOURMENT
Mr.McElligatt motioned to adjourn.
Mr.Cook seconded the motion.
Vote: 5-0-0
Roll Call Vote:
Mr.McElligatt;yes
