2
three years. We will continue to monitor the site for about two more years to
study the recovery from the disturbances caused by dock construction, use, and
removal .
I emphasize the temporary nature of the thing because it should not be
perceived to be a dock. Its function will be to simulate the effects of dock
placement. All components of the structure will be scaled appropriately so
that its shadow will resemble that of a dock. It will not be used as a dock,
except for the necessary aspect of occasionally mooring a boat to it and
maneuvering along side it.
Our proposed study site is at the mouth of Great River on a 10 acre
parcel of land presently owned by the Department of Environmental Management
and managed by WBNERR. The land is scheduled to be transferred to the Town of
Mashpee in the future. This site i.s presently undisturbed (i .e. no dock
exists there now or has in the recent past), is representative of local
coastal pond littoral environments, and has "typical" benthic flora and fauna.
It also has been recently studied by DMF; this data base is a valuable asset
to our research program. We plan to complete a pre-construction examination
of the study site by this fall to be ready for the placement of the unit.
We are now initiating the permit application process for construction.
Bob Sherman, Mashpee Conservation Commissioner, has agreed to assist us in the
preparation of our submissions. By way of this letter, we are seeking your
endorsement of this project and your approval to locate it temporarily at the
desired study site.
If you need more information about this proposal, please call me at
WBNERR (457-0495) . I will endeavor to assist you in any way I can.
Sincerely,
Richard Crawford, Ph.D.
Research Coordinator
cc: R. Sherman
