COMMUNICATIONS AND CORRESPONDENCE
OLD BUSINESS
1. Shellfish Rules and Regulations: Status on recently approved R&R and projected timetable for final
approval.
Mr.McElligatt said the final draft of the Rules and Regulations is going to the Board of Selectmen and
then to Legal Counsel. We're hoping to get them approved before the next Shellfish Season starts.
NEW BUSINESS
1. Shellfish Constable Report
Mr.McElligatt met with the Town Manager,Andy Gottlieb,Ashley Fisher,Town Engineer and the
Sewer Commission to discuss the numbers from the original nitrogen removal plan from 18 years ago.
Conditions have since degraded and our numbers were not met.Going forward we're corning up with
three viable options:
1. Status Quo(what we're doing now)
2.Hit levels outlined in a revision of the original plan.
3.Full steam ahead;expand ournumbers,bring on new staff,more money,more seed,etc...
Some good news is CIP funds were finalized last night, and if approved at Town Meeting,we are granted
2 new vehicles and funding for some other new equipment that we need.
Mr.McElligatt said recreational fishery has definitely slowed down, demand has dropped. That's par for
the course this time of year.
We are finalizing our gear and seed orders for next year.Waiting to hear back from some hatcheries. We
want to have 3 test sites with floating gear, roughly 12-15 cages per site. There could be some pushback
from people who don't like looking at aquaculture gear,we're going to do our best to minimize any visual
impact.
The last snow storm caused some damage to cages,we repaired most of the damage.
The Bohnenbergers have finally received their official aquaculture license and are looking to start with
about 25k animals this summer.
Mr.McElligatt said there is going to be a joint meeting with Sewer and Board of Selectmen to discuss
Shellfish.Mr.Thomas said we'll have representation at that meeting.
2.ARC presentation
Rick Sawyer from ARC discussed preliminary plans ARC has to expand its business to Mashpee. He said
it makes financial sense to have a farm and a nursery operating in Mashpee. They are working on a
business plan now.The plan is to hire a staff to operate the farm and nursery. The goal is to work on
grants with at least two other people and work with the Town to identify a site for the nursery. They
would like to start this year with a floating upweller if possible. The nursery would be a boom for your
growers. ARC also buys product back and sells it around the globe. It can help your growers in a number
of ways.
Mr.Thomas said that we may be the only town that includes shellfish in their nitrogen plan and asked
when the best time of year is to start.Rick Sawyer said the first step is the floating upweller and that can
