Cemetery Commission
August 6, 2021
Members Present: Ernest Virgilio
Mike Scirpoli
Charlie Hinckley
Others: Kimberli Maki-Smith, Maki Monument
Catherine Laurent, DPW Director
The Commission convened the meeting at 3:00 pm at Mashpee DPW.
Maximum Allowable Memorial Stone Dimensions
The dimensions were set when the Great Neck Woods Cemetery opened in 2002 and have not
been modified since. Currently the maximum size for a double plot is 30" headstone. A
question was raised recently about allowing a 36" stone. Kim from Maki Monument noted that
there are already 24 stones of that size on double plots in the cemetery. She said that is the
standard size elsewhere. The Commission voted 3-0 in favor of allowing up a headstone for a
double casket plot to be up to 36" wide.
Grave O enin s
With the sale of Century Vault, there has been an issue with the restoration of graves after
interment. The Commission directed Catherine to communicate with funeral homes on what
the expectations/requirements are for restoration. If there continues to be an issue, the Town
may issue a bid for openings and require all interments to use said bidder.
FY21 FY22 FY23 Cemeter Im rovements
The new columbariums have been installed (FY21). The blue stone for the walkway/patio is still
backordered. Once received, the walkway/patio will be laid and decorative trees/shrubs
planted (FY22). The Commission discussed for FY23 moving forward with design plans for
expansion of the cemetery. There are only two sections in the existing cemetery that have not
yet been laid out.
En raving Standards for New Columbariums
The Commission agreed that a standard should be established for engraving of the niches in the
new columbariums so that there is consistency. The Commission reviewed the standards for
Mosswood Cemetery in Barnstable.
• Lettering starts at 1%" down from the top.
• Lettering can go no closer to the bottom than 1Y".
• Font style is Extra Wide Roman Modified.
• Font sizing is: Last Name 1%"; First Name 1"; Dates 3l
• Last Name must be listed first.
• Maximum of 6 lines.
0 Lettering shall be engraved directly onto the polished surface.
