Shellfish Constable Report.
th
Mr. McElligatt informed the Commission that September 16 will be his last day working with
the Town of Mashpee.
The past Month has basically been focused on getting the seasonal employees up to speed on
what needs to be done for the remainder of the season.
All of the oysters are in the water and are looking very good.
There are 2 million quahogs in the FLUPSY system right now. Growth had slowed down in July
and August due dissolved oxygen levels because of high water temperature. However, there was
not a lot of loss. There was a significant amount more of mortality in oysters this year because it
was a very rapid year in oyster growth and they weren’t able to get in and split their densities fast
enough.
The clams at Thatch will need to be dug this time next year.
The FLUPSY at Hamblin Pond is fully setup and established and there are different sized oysters
and quahogs in it.
Mr. McElligatt met with Dick Noonan, of Waterways, who is the liaison on the dredge project.
The mother site for the cloning sponge is at the top of Little River and Hamblin Pond.
Matthew Britton, the dredge contractor is seeking to use siltation watering bags instead of deep
watering. Spoils will be removed and trucked offsite. This will not take place for 2-3 years.

Chair Thomas thanked Mr. McElligatt on behalf of the Commission for his passion and
commitment over the last few years.

ADDITIONAL TOPICS
(This space is reserved for topics that the Chairman did not reasonable anticipate would be discussed)

2
