He came to this realization when he dealt with
antisemitism and he had to confront that. In his own head he would say the person does not
understand.
Ms. Stevenson reiterated ignorance is the lack of knowing. The person could be very smart
and just not know.
Mr. Weeden commented that a lot of it comes from the privilege and entitlement and people
putting these blinders on that they stand behind as if they don't know better. We should all be
mindful about what we say, our actions, and how they may be received. We should have
compassion for other people and for all things that space is shared with. Culturally, that is how
he was raised was with a mutual respect. If you do not treat me right then you bring it upon
yourself. It comes down to having understanding and that level of respect for the place you
live. He cannot rely on ignorance.
Ms. Johnson -Graham commends David, and she knows he is humble man and not outspoken.
She referred to allies, like Ms. Stevenson, and how that makes a big statement. He had the
support of tribal members, but having non -tribal citizens as allies who want to make a
difference and have the tribal interest at heart is what makes our town better.
Trish Keli'inui commented that tribal members noticed when other people spoke out. Tribal
members showed up as expected, but to see non tribal allies or neighbors speak so
passionately, it was noticed. She noted he was humbled by the empathy that was shown. He
did not ask them to speak, but he truly appreciated their efforts.
Mr. Weeden wanted to inform the Committee of a Mass Cultural Council grant opportunity for
$2,500 allotted for festivals or projects, and they are open to a lot of types of organizations.
Training Opportunities
Ms. Stevenson will be attending a training program on white privilege held on October 28th and
29th at Barnstable High School. She was given free tuition because of the work this Committee
does as well as the League of Women Voters who has a DEI group under them.
Projects 2022-2023
Ms. Stevenson is inviting a gentleman to come speak who works with veterans and belonging.
NEW BUSINESS
L
