Review of ProposedSchool and Town-wide Mask Requirements. Mr. Harrington commented
that there were two questions for consideration at this meeting: 1) masks in School and,2)masks
for Town-wide indoor public spaces. Mr. Harrington noted that the State School Board did allow
the Commissioner of DESE to issue a mask mandate for all schools in Massachusetts, and that
mandate would take effect next week and be in place until October 1st. Schools can unmask if
they meet a vaccination rate of 0%of student and staff.
In regards to a Town-wide mandate, Mr. Harrington stated that he had originally used a 3%
positivity rate as the threshold for requiring masks in public indoor spaces, but the Board could
vote to set a different threshold if they chose to. He reported that the positivity rate dropped
from 3. 1%to 3.13%in the past two weeks, so there was a decline in numbers. The hospitals are
not seeing severe cases that require ICU beds, and the deaths are down considerably as well.
Board members performed a full review of proposed School and Town-wide mask requirements.
Many members of the public attended the meeting to comment on the School mandate. The
Board concluded that they needed additional time to review the scientific research/data that the
public presented before making a decision on the School mandate. Mr. Baumgaertel stated that
he did not feel Mashpee was at a point with COVID-19 where a Town-wide mandate was
necessary.
Since the Board was not prepared to take a formal position on the matter, no vote was required.
NEXT MEETING
The next meeting of the Board of Health was scheduled for Thursday, September 2, 2021 at 6:00 PM.
1
