Mashpee Inclusion and Diversity Committee
16 Great Neck Road North
Mashpee, MA 02649
Ms. DeBoer informed the Committee of a story about a group of black students using a
derogatory word amongst themselves. As a group they wanted to belong within each other,
and when they were probed by a white teacher about using a specific word, they went
against her, as it was a word they used for belonging within themselves. She was offended
and used an ‘I’ statement letting them know, “I’m offended by that” and “I don’t want you
using it on my playground”. Once she addressed her stance, she can’t turn away, she has
to mark this moment and stand her ground by attending to the problem. She gets to say
she felt offended.

Ms. DeBoer also discussed an occurrence where the Native American’s were hosting an
th
assembly for the 7 graders. A caucasian boy from Florida who was new to the school and
somewhat on the spectrum made some very hurtful remarks. He had limited social skills
and was not reading at an age appropriate level. It was addressed with his parents but
there were consequences for his actions. A training was then given through the Tribe. His
disability is not a justification for him to not be held accountable. We need to seek to
understand before we judge.

Ms. DeBoer noted Covid was a tough time for teachers and caregivers as well. They were
honored as heroes then when school was back in session teachers were being vilified. She
used the term microcosms in describing the school setting being a smaller world of a larger
part of society.

Ms. Hicks thinks it would be appropriate to have a peer group acting as ambassadors to
younger classman and bridging that gap. Ms. Kent commented it’s a great idea and she
believes the school has a buddy system.

2. Addition to Purpose Statement
This statement is included at the end of the minutes. There was a minor addition made in
session.
MOTION:
Ms. Hicks made a motion to accept the amended MIDC Purpose Statement.
Seconded by Mr. Kupferman. All in favor.

3. Race Amity Day Pre-Planning
Dan Kupferman will Chair the subcommittee again. There will be a better understanding of
the funding sources come February.

4. Develop Process for Community Project
5
