<br /> <br />SHELLFISH COMMISSION <br />MEETING MINUTES <br />JANURAY 9, 2024 – 6:00PM <br />MASHPEE TOWN HALL – 16 GREAT NECK ROAD NORTH <br />WAQUOIT MEETING ROOM <br /> <br />PRESENT: Chair, Peter Thomas, Co-Chair, Dick Cook, Shellfish Constable, Chris Avis, <br /> Bill Holmes, Jaime Pachico <br /> <br />OTHER ATTENDEES: Director of Natural Resources, Ashley Fisher <br /> <br />ABSENT: Daryl Christensen <br /> Buddy Pocknett <br /> <br />CALL MEETING TO ORDER: Chair Thomas called the meeting to order in Open Session in the <br />Ockway Meeting Room at 6:10PM. <br /> <br />PUBLIC COMMENT: None at this time. <br /> <br />MINUTES: Discussion and approval of the December 12, 2023 Shellfish Commission Meeting minutes. <br /> <br />A motion was made by Bill Holmes to accept the December 12, 2023 Shellfish Commission Meeting <br />minutes with a correction. <br />Motion seconded by Co-Chair, Dick Cook. <br />Motion passed by unanimous consent. <br /> <br />COMMUNICATIONS AND CORRESPONDENCE: None at this time. <br /> <br /> <br />OLD BUSINESS: <br /> <br />1. Update on Michael Ronhock Aquaculture Revocation Status. <br />Chris Avis reported that Mr. Ronhock has pulled all of his gear and has submitted a letter relinquishing <br />his aquaculture grant. Chris stated that he will get it on the February 13, 2024 Select Board meeting <br />agenda. <br /> <br /> <br />NEW BUSINESS: <br /> <br />1. Report by DNR, Ashely Fisher on 5 Year, Long Range Plan for Aquaculture Grants in Mashpee. <br />Chair Thomas asked Ms. Fisher to attend the Shellfish Commission meeting and give an overview of long <br />range plans of the Department in getting more animals in the water to assist in cleaning the water and to <br />benefit the recreational and commercial people of the Town. <br />Ashley stated that she has been speaking with people in neighboring Towns to try and come up with a <br />way to supplement the growing that we are currently doing. She said she has been speaking with Chuck <br />Martinsen, the Deputy Director of Marine and Environmental Services in Falmouth. She said he has a <br />great program where the Town of Falmouth is offering plots to growers. Falmouth is getting their own <br />lease areas permitted through the Division of Marine Fisheries and then offering them to a growers that <br />would come into the aquaculture industry with little to nothing. The Town would then lease them gear to <br />be able to start their operation. This way the Town is then able to count each animal grown on that site as <br />a nutrient credit because it permitted by the Town and under the Town’s permitted propagation area even <br />1 <br /> <br /> <br />
