Popponesset Approach Dredge Project Update
It was reported that the Popponesset approach is due to begin on or about March 1, 2024 and
dredging is not permitted after May 1, 2024.

NEW BUSINESS

Request for the Waterways Commission to partially fund a purchase of a new patrol
boat for the Harbormaster. This new vessel will replace the current SAFE boat which
will be given back to DCR. Total purchase of the new vessel will be approximately
$300,000.00 with $100,000.00 coming from the Waterways account. The rest will be
funded via Capital Improvement.
Mr. Tomaino stated that the DNR Harbormaster Division is seeking to replace the SAFE boat
that they have in their fleet. He gave a quick rundown of all of the vessels that are currently in
the fleet.
M1 is a 2007 25’ SAFE boat. It is assigned as the Waquoit boat and is generally in the water
year round. It has a minimum crew requirement of 2, preferably 3 especially during the winter.
M2 is a 2004 23’ Edgewater. It was purchased recently and will be assigned as the Poppy patrol
boat. It’s in the water from mid-April through September.
M3 is a 2001 22’ Mako and is the lake boat for Mashpee Wakeby. Minimum crew requirement
is 1 person.
M4 is a 1989 17’ Carolina skiff. It’s in the water from mid-April through September. It is the
John’s Pond lake boat. It requires 1 crew member.
M5 is the newest vessel in the fleet. It is a 2022 Munson and is utilized year round as a “dual
purpose” patrol and work boat. Minimum crew requirement is 3.
The pump out boat is taken care of by the State.
The spare boat is a 1999 Carolina skiff that is shared with the Shellfish Division.

He reported that M1 is in need of repairs. It has been out of service since November. It will
need to be repowered within the next couple of years because of the high engine hours. This is
the boat that he wants to replace. Mr. Tomaino distributed a quote for the replacement boat
to the Commission. A 23’ center console, walk around SAFE boat with curtains, heater and 2
seats at the cockpit. It will have a single 300 Yamaha engine. The price quote is $281,961.84.

A motion was made by Gregg Fraser to approve $100,000.00 from the Waterways
Improvement Account to partially fund the purchase of a new SAFE Boat contingent upon the
current SAFE Boat be stripped of all electronics and engines which are to be sold and the
surplus of said sales be returned to the Waterways Improvement Account.
Motion seconded by Dick Noonan.
Motion passed by unanimous consent.

2
