When these algae die off, they consume too much oxygen, resulting in the death of <br /> marine life, contaminated shellfish beds, reduced quality of life, and economic impacts. <br /> • Why does this happen? There are two different sources of nitrogen: point sources, <br /> such as wastewater treatment facilities and stormwater discharges, and non-point <br /> sources, which are harder to deal with. Non-point sources can include septic <br /> systems, fertilizer for lawn care, and atmospheric deposition. Ms. Thomas <br /> highlights that the primary source of nitrogen for coastal communities in <br /> southeast Massachusetts has been attributed to private septic systems. During her <br /> presentation, she explains a field test located in Vineyard Haven and the impact <br /> sustained from the septic system. Possible solutions to address this issue include <br /> innovative septic systems, aquaculture, opening ponds, and using Permeable <br /> Reactive Barriers. <br /> 1 <br />
