The Commission ultimately agreed to leave the Callie’s Beach area as it currently is and focus on the
Great River area.
Chair Thomas asked Chris Avis if, logistically, the process of temporarily changing the designation of the
shell fishing area in the Great River is something that will have to be approved by the Select Board. Chris
responded that he isn’t 100% sure and will inquire with the Select Board. Chair Thomas stated that if the
Commission agrees to do this, the procedure needs to be known and a well detailed map should be
provided so that it’s well presented when it goes before the Select Board.

Chair Thomas made a motion to propose to the Select Board of the Town of Mashpee to designate
the area in Great River south of South Cape Beach Estates Association Beach (as depicted on the
map) as an Open Shell Fishing Area (open to both Commercial and Recreational shell fishing).
Motion seconded by Co-Chair Cook.
Motion passed by unanimous consent.

It’s important to note that the area north of South Cape Beach Estates Association Beach will remain as it
is currently designated as a recreational shell fishing area.

NEW BUSINESS:

1. Shellfish Constable’s Report.
Chris Avis reported that at this time of year there’s a lot of splitting of seed, tumbling and sorting going
on.
He stated that the Department travelled to New Jersey and picked up another 1 million quahogs and they
now have 3 million quahogs growing onsite, in upwellers in Little River.
He stated that everything is doing very well and he thinks that, based on densities, they will be ready to
broadcast soon.
He reported that they are down a vessel as the Carolina skiff was recently rear ended on Rte. 151. They
are still waiting on the adjuster. Also, the fuel pump on the S2 vessel failed and was replaced.
Chris reported that they pulled out, cleaned and put back close to 100 3x3 cages in Little River.
They have 15 3x3 cage in Orsini Point that are mid-size and the oysters look very good.
Chris said they will be splitting and tumbling next week and that the Oysters in Shoestring Bay have
exploded.
It was reported that the Department gave Scott Gallagher 10 oysters from the Mashpee River and 10
oysters from Mashpee Neck Landing to test and the results showed no Vibrio or STX. They will be
testing again on August 20th.
Chris said that the bottom survey has been done for the Bohnenberger Grant and they are awaiting the
results.
John Quiterio has launched his gear in the Great River.
Chris reported that there were 2 landings from Dick Cook and everything was great.
Seed orders have all been fulfilled and they are just awaiting 600,000 oysters from ARC.
The Department was awarded 1AmeriCorp volunteer for 2 days, Wednesday and Thursday, next year.
It was reported that the Department will be losing 4 seasonal employees at the end of August leaving only
th
2 seasonal employees through October 11. Chris said they still have a great bit of work to do but, they
should be okay.
The Department has been to take names of people spot checked and will be recording them in the
mooring info. No infractions have been found.

ADDITIONAL TOPICS:
N/A

2
