Town of Mashpee

Shellfish Commission 16 Great Neck Road North

Mashpee, MA 02649

MINUTES OF MEETING – June 20, 2011

Attendance:
Commissioners: Peter Thomas, William Holmes, John Guerriere and Richard
York
Others: Concurrent meeting with the Mashpee Board of Selectmen and public
attendees.

Convene Meeting: 7:25 PM

Fish, Wildlife and Natural Resources Commission (FWNRC) of the Mashpee
Wampanoag Tribe – Quahog Relay to Mashpee Water:

Representatives of the Fish, Wildlife and Natural Resources Commission
(FWNRC) of the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe described their interest in a relay of
contaminatets quahog from the Taunton River (Mount Hope Bay, Fall River area)
to Mashpee. Greg Sawyer from the Massachusetts described the contaminated
relay program. Shellfish Constable York was in favor of purchasing shellfish
seed from hatcheries, but not contaminated relays from out of Town.
Enforcement of the relay area when it is closed is a problem. Relayed quahogs
do not remove much nitrogen compared to quahogs grown from small seed in
Mashpee waters.
